Sugarmill Woods is located in Homosassa Florida in the southernmost section of Citrus County and represents one of the most unique communities in Florida. Sugarmill Woods was the first residential development in the United States to develop the concept of "wildlife strips" (now called greenbelts), allowing people and nature to live together in harmony.

Development of the Sugarmill Woods community started in 1972. More than one million trees were planted at Sugarmill Woods, assuring a natural home for the more than 150 plant and animal species  that reside in Sugarmill Woods, including the Great Horned Owl, Eastern Mockingbird, Red-Bellied Woodpecker, Eastern Cardinal and Eastern Fox Squirrel.

Sugarmill Woods has three golf courses, making it a country club paradise featuring year round golf, tennis and swimming.

The first nine holes, the club house, tennis courts and swimming pool were completed in 1975. Designer Ron Garl, Florida's foremost golf course architect, designed the layout of the golf course which has received national acclaim since play began.

The second nine holes were opened in November, 1978, and with the dedication of the third nine holes in December, 1981, the Garl plans for the Sugarmill Woods golf course were complete.

In 1992 an additional 18 holes of golf designed by three time U.S. Open Champion, Hale Irwin was completed along with a second clubhouse and a fine dining restaurant.

The Sugarmill Woods development as well as the residents are especially aware of the delicate balance  within their eco-system.

As such, Sugarmill Woods  features one of the most modern sewage treatment facilities in West Central Florida, a central water distribution system, and as governmental regulations and economic considerations have permitted, the installation of underground utilities.
